I finally figured out what I was doing wrong or at least I finally figured out what works for me. I was using the joy stick to move Rynn's hand. It is much much easier to use the arrow keys. That works fine for me. So if anyone else out there was like me, maybe that will help.

I think I give up on the tiles. I finally went ahead into Shiverbane and have seen no tiles there yet.

I could use a tip or two on how to summon magic. I can select it from my inventory of course, but I just can't seem to figure out how to summon the magic using the hand motion thing. I am pressing O and moving Rynn's hand in the pattern shown but nothing ever happens. I must be missing something ...
